The objective of this course is the understanding of the basic principles considered in Ecosystem Ecology, with special attention to Ecosystem Structure and the flows of matter and energy within and between ecosystems. This course is taught during the fall semester of each year.

PCFFBO0104 Characterization and Interaction of Biotic and Abiotic Components of Ecosystems 

This is a multidisciplinary course offered in the new curricula of the Forestry program at University of Chile (Forest Engineering) . The course is taught (annual course) during the first year of the program and considers  topics such as botany, geomorphology and basic soil concepts.

FR04204-1 Measurement and Monitoring of Environmental Variables. Summer Practicum

This course aims to provide the students with the a basic knowledege regarding the principles behind the measuremetn of various environmental variables in natural environments, including biophysical variables such as temperature, soil water content, water infiltration, solar radiation and its interception by canopy covers. The biology of the ecosystems is also covered by including monitoring of soil protozoa, nematodes, birds, amphibians and small mammals.

The objectives of this course are the understanding of  the causes and processes that originate the different landforms of our planet with special attention to the distribution of the chilean main landforms and the genesis and processes related to them. This course also help in the analisys of different climatic, bioclimatic, and meteorological phenomena, with emphasis in the Chilean geography. Different terrestrial biomes in terms of their distribution, composition, and structure are also studied. This course is taught during the spring and fall semesters.

EF026-1 Forest Edaphology

The main objective of this course is to understand the physical, chemical, and biological processes that play a key role in the formation and functioning of soils. Soils are studied as “living system”, leaven behind the erroneous conception that soil is an abiotic system. Emphasis is give to forest soils in terms of their particular properties and as a main component of wildland ecosystems. This course is taught during the spring semester.

 PR009 Forest Soils Practicum

This course is offered during the summer semester (January). Students that finished the four semester of the  Forest engineering curricula have to take a six-day fieldtrip to the South of Chile (Región de los Lagos), where they describe different forest soils of the region and determine physical, chemical, and biological properties as part of the learning process.


Graduate level

EP049-1  Ecology and Conservation of Ecosystems-Los Lagos Region.

This is a multidisciplinary course offered every two years and consist of an entire week in the Los Lagos Region (South of Chile) where students have an in-deep contact with different natural ecosystems of this region.  (Spring semester).

EP009-1 Communication in Sciences

The goal of this course  is to explain to the students how to publish a scientific paper, following the IMRAD sequence. It also gives key information regarding oral and poster presentations  in scientific meetings.

AG040274-1 P Soil Microbiology

This course is offered in the Magister of Soil and Water Management and covers key topics related to Soil microbiology such as the soil as an habitat to soil organisms, the organisms that live and develop in the soil (e.g. bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, fungi), microbial metabolism, transformations of C and soil organic matter, and specific topics such as micorrhizal associations and bioremediation. This course is taught during the fall semester.
